NEW TO AUSTRALIA IN 2012
Spartacus is a multiple Gr1-winning son of Danehill who notched 3 wins as a two year old on turf in Ireland and Europe. The only juvenile to win two Gr1 races in Europe that year, his Group level wins ranged in distances from 1200m up to 1600m.
Trained by Aidan O'Brien at Ballydole in Ireland, Spartacus' wins included the Gr1 Phoenix Stakes (6f or 1200m at the Curragh) and Gr1 Gran Criterium (8f or 1600m Italy's premier Gr1 event for 2YOs). He also won his maiden on debut in Ireland (7f or 1400m) and was runner-up in the Gr3 Anglesey Stakes (6 1/4 f or 1300m at the Curragh). Importantly at the time, he was one of only three Danehill sons to be a multiple Gr1-winning juvenile, sharing the coveted title with the likes of Rock of Gibraltar and Danehill Dancer.
He stood in first season at stud at Coolmore in Ireland, before shuttling to stand his first southern hemisphere season in New Zealand in 2004. Impressively he was crowned Champion 1st season sire in New Zealand 2007/08 and NZ leading 2nd season sire in 2008/09. He is a successful sire across four continents, boasting winners in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Europe.
Spartacus boasts a strong pedigree from a very fast family, being a full brother to two stakes-winners, including Gr1 Hong Kong Derby winner, Johan Cruyff. With multiple Gr1 placings in the Gr1 Hong Kong Gold Cup, Gr1 HKJC Stewards Cup and Gr1 HKJC Queen Elizabeth II Cup, Johan Cruyff was also a successful Gr1-producing sire.
Spartacus is by the sire of sires in Danehill, while his dam sire Ogygian was a proven broodmare sire which included the likes of Johannesburg (USA Champion 2YO). What's more his grand dam sire is Damascus, who also left Champion 2YO sire-son, Pompeii Court.
On his female side his stakes-related grand dam, Martha Queen is by Nijinsky, while her dam is by Round Table.
Spartacus is well-suited to Australian-bred speed orientated mares and is well-priced to suit the breed to race market. Furthermore he is an outstanding type with great muscle, conformation and temperament which certainly ticks all the boxes, so don’t miss your chance to secure his services at his first season at stud in Australia.
